Testing

There are multiple assessments Jones County students take: national, state, college entrance, military battery as well as career ready. Understanding how the test is organized, the content being tested over and becoming familiar with the test can aid in positive results. General information about each test below can be found by clicking on the link.

The National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) is a credential based upon the WorkKeys® assessments that demonstrates to employers that an individual possesses the basic workplace skills required for 21st century jobs. All Jones County High School students will take the NCRC the fall of their senior year. Students are testing in 3 areas:

WORKPLACE DOCUMENTS Comprehending work-related reading materials, from memos and bulletins to policy manuals and governmental regulations.

APPLIED MATH Applying mathematical reasoning to work-related problems.

GRAPHIC LITERACY Using information from materials such as diagrams, floor plans, tables, forms, graphs, and charts.

National Career Development Guidelines (sd.gov)

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a multiple-choice test, administered by the United States Military Entrance Processing Command, used to determining qualification for enlistment in the United States Armed Forces. The ASVAB measures strengths, weaknesses and potential for future success in four domains: verbal, math, science & technical and spatial. Not only a military battery, Jones County students will learn about their strengths, interests and use the information in the OCCU-Find to explore careers and possibly, their dream job. JCHS juniors take the ASVAB before Christmas break.

Jones County Middle School 8th graders have been selected to represent schools in South Dakota by participating in the 2024 administration of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students in the United States know and can do in various subjects and is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), within the U.S. Department of Education. Jones County 8th graders will be tested in mathematics and reading in January 2024.

NAEP is a common measure of student achievement across the country and is used to inform education policies and practices. The results are released as The Nation’s Report Card.

South Dakota public school students participate in annual summative testing in English language arts and mathematics. The results of these tests are included in the state accountability system. South Dakota also requires annual assessment of science and writing. Students in grades 3-8 & 11 test in the spring of the school year in English language arts and mathematics and students in grades 5, 8 & 11 test in the spring of the school year in science.
